Abstract

Abstract: Sustainable livestock production is dependent on the ability to provide the resources and energy suitable for efficient growth and healthy maintenance of plant and animal life with minimal ecosystem disruption and protection of animal and public health. Water is one critical component of livestock production. Insufficient or excessive water inputs can seriously affect production outcomes. Management of livestock production systems can also affect surface and groundwater hydrology and water quality with various outcomes for ecosystem health and animal and public health. Results and observations from more than 30 years of hydrologic research of livestock production systems on marginally productive lands of central Appalachia will be the focus of this presentation on a systems approach to management for optimum livestock production with goals of efficient water use and protection of surface and groundwater supplies.
