Abstract

Abstract: A survey study was carried out in ice caped Northern Areas of Pakistan to investigate productive and reproductive performances of five local goat breeds. The data on productive and reproductive traits performances were collected for five goat breeds viz. Kel, Baltistani, Koh-e-Khizar, Kaghani and Gaddi. Our results showed higher birth weight in Gaddi (3.00kg) than Kel, Koh-e-Khizar and Kaghani (2.00kg). Lowest birth weight was observed in Baltistani (1.00 kg). Maximum weaning weight was observed in Gaddi (10.57 ± 0.59 kg) and lowest in Kaghani (8.93 ± 0.59 kg). Moreover weaning age was lowest in Kaghani (3.64 ± 0.38 months) and highest was in Kel (4.36 ± 0.43 months). The milk yield was low around 1kg in all five breeds while highest lactation length observed in Kaghani (5 months). Moreover age at first heat in Kel, Baltistani, Koh-e-Khizar, Kaghani and Gaddi breeds were 11.73 ± 0.70, 9.27 ± 0.70, 11.18 ± 0.70, 15.21 ± 0.62 and 11.21 ± 0.62 months respectively. The maximum twining percentage at first kidding was in Kel and Baltistani (18.18 ± 2.66 %). Twining percentage at second or latter kidding was 29.09 ± 4.75, 35.0 ± 4.75, 26.36 ± 4.75, 20.71 ± 4.21 and 27.86 ± 4.21 in Kel, Baltistani, Koh-e-Khizar, Kaghani and Gaddi respectively. Kidding interval and service period was almost same in all five breeds (8 months and 3 months respectively). Age at first kidding of Kel, Baltistani, Koh-e-Khizar, Kaghani and Gaddi were 16.72 ± 0.71, 14.27 ± 0.71, 16.27 ± 0.71, 20.50 ± 0.63 and 16.28 ± 0.63months respectively. The data showed diversified productive and reproductive performances for five Northern Areas breeds of Pakistan. The information reported in the present study could be useful for conservation through improved utilization of local breeds.
