- Abstract: The objective of the study was to evaluate the effect of temperature and sodium hydroxide with a Clextral EV25® extruder in corn stover on ruminal fermentation with the gas production technique. The extruded corn stover (ECS ) was subjected to 3 levels of NaOH (0, 2.5 and 5%) x 3 temperatures (50, 70 and 90 ° C) and neutralized with 10% H3 PO4 to evaluate the treatments: ECS 0 -50, ECS 0–70, ECS 0–90. ECS 2.5–50, ECS 2.5–70, ECS 2.5–90, ECS 5–50, ECS 5–70 and ECS 5–90 plus ground corn stover (GCS ) as a control in bottles of 120 mL with 12 repetitions per treatment. In vitro dry matter digestibility at 72h (IVDMD ), fractional volume of fast-fermenting carbohydrates (FFC 0-8h), medium (MFC 10-30h) and slow (SFC 36-72h), maximum volume of gas (Vmax), rate of gas production (S), lag time (L) and atmospheric pollution index (API = (Vmax / IVDMD) * 100). The data were analyzed according to a completely randomized design with a 3x3 factorial arrangement plus a control, with MIXED procedure of SAS. Interaction temperature*sodium hydroxide for the variables L, IVDMD and API was observed (Table 1), where the extrusion treatments ECS 5–70 and ECS 5–90 presented the highest value of IVDMD (25.66%, P <0.05) compared to the GCS; with ECS 0–50, ECS 0–70 and ECS 0–90 were observed values below the GCS, decreasing the IVDMD by 7.19% (P <0.05). The temperature did not modify the ruminal fermentation parameters (Table 2), however increasing the alkali level (Table 3), the fractional volume of slow fermentation carbohydrates (SFC 36-72h), L and the API decreased (linear effect P <0.01) and IVDMD increased (29%, linear effect P <0.01). Therefore it is recommended to treat corn stover with 5% sodium hydroxide and neutralize it with 10% phosphoric acid to improve the corn stover digestibility. … (more)
