- Abstract: This study reviews the fire behavior of several polymeric-based insulative materials, such as carbon black-reinforced elastomers, poly (vinyl chloride), as well as polystyrene and polyurethane foams. The potentially toxic emissions, such as carbon monoxide, carbon dioxide, formaldehyde and total volatile organic compounds have been quantified for each type of material under controlled and reproductible ignition setups. It has been determined that the polystyrene foam presents the most acute hazard with respect to the total volatile organic compounds content, namely 1.582 mg/ cm 3 and respectively carbon monoxide (75 mg/cm 3 ) followed by the elastomer composite (1.261 mg/ cm 3 TVOC).
