Abstract

Highlights: Scientific evidence on the use of bee venom for therapeutic purposes is recent. BV contains many biologically active compounds, melittin is the most abundant. Safety concerns: it contains major allergens and some compounds are toxic. BV or its isolated components may be used for the development of new drugs. Further studies must clarify the optimum dose, adverse effects and interactions.
