- Abstract: Gears play an important role in mechanical power transmission. It is critical in several design scenarios to optimize its weight without compromising the power transmission requirements. It has been noted that the majority of the gears transmit power only in one direction during most of their lifetime. However, conventional gear design procedures do not account for it and assume equal power transmission in both directions. This results in equal strength in both direction and becomes over design in one direction. It may be possible to reduce the weight of the gear if the power transmission is predominantly in one direction. In the present work, an asymmetric pair of gears were designed for this purpose. The gears were checked and found satisfactory in various aspects such as interference, backlash etc. Design of experiments principle is applied to reduce the number of combinations of the asymmetric gears. The selected gears are analyzed using the finite element method and the torque capacity of asymmetric gears are estimated. Asymmetric gears reduce the bending stress up to 25% in one direction when compared to symmetric gears of comparable size and weight. The selection of suitable design parameter for a pair of asymmetric gears for given power transmission is also the scope of the present work.
