Abstract: Magnetorheological finishing is a very effective polishing method, offering the advantages of high efficiency, low sub-surface damage and very flat finished surface. The magnetic field generator is the core component in magnetorheological finishing, and significantly affects the polishing efficiency and quality of the finished surface. This study focuses on how the arrangement of magnets in the magnetic field generator affects polishing. The relationship between the magnet arrangement and distribution of magnetic flux density was investigated by establishing a mathematical model of the magnetic flux density in the magnetorheological fluid present in the polishing zone. The effects of different distribution modes of the magnets on polishing were analyzed via simulation and experiments.
