- Abstract: Sub-rectangular tunnel cross-sections are commonly used in underground engineering projects. However, very limited studies have dealt with the design of this kind of non-circular tunnels. In this paper, taking a twin-lane metro tunnel as an example, the optimization process of sub-rectangular tunnels in terms of tunnel lining forces is presented using the Hyperstatic Reaction Method (HRM). A series of mathematical functions considering the tunnel shape are used and the optimization of sub-rectangular tunnels shape is deduced. The effect of different parameters, such as the coefficient of lateral earth pressure at rest K 0, Young's modulus Es of soil, tunnel depth C, surface loads P 0 on the internal forces and shape of sub-rectangular tunnel is then investigated.
