Abstract

Abstract: The load bearing implant is the need of time nowadays, as the risk of an accident is increasing day by day. These implants must be biocompatible and should have similar mechanical properties to that of the cortical and cancellous bone. Ti and its alloy are often used in a load bearing implant because of their strength and good corrosion resistance. In the current study, a new alloy Ti–8Nb–2Fe has been developed for the load bearing implant. The alloy is reinforced with silica-based S53P4 bioactive glass in the following manner i.e. 0%( N1), 5%( N2), 10%( N3) and 20%( N4). The physio-mechanical, corrosion and biological properties of the samples were analyzed. The cell culture indicates that the bioactivity increases with increase in the reinforced fraction of bioactive glass and is maximum in N4. The composite N4 having 20% reinforcement of S53P4 bioactive glass comes out to be the best composition as it exhibits good biocompatibility, lower elastic modulus (63 GPa), optimum compressive strength (542 MPa), enhanced bioactivity and increased hardness (510 Hv) as compared to currently used implants. So it can be suggested to be used as a orthopedic implant.
