- Abstract: A micro free-flow electrophoresis ( μ FFE) device with cellulose membranes as ion-permeable separators was developed. Due to the neutral surface zeta potential of poly(methyl methacrylate-co-styrene), electroosmotic flow was not generated. The developed μ FFE device was evaluated in separations of two fluorescent dyes, rhodamine B and sulforhodamine B. Peak resolution ( Rs ) at an electric field strength of 11.5 V mm −1 was 4.1, 2.8, and 1.8 at sample flow velocities of 1.3, 2.0, and 2.7 mm s −1, respectively. All-polymer-based μ FFE devices are ready for use without pretreatment and satisfy the criteria for practical biological sample separation and purification in biomedical applications.
