- Highlights: Estimation of CTOA using EWF test is recommended for sheet steels. The method has been applied for DP 780 grade automotive steel sheet (thickness = 1 mm). The estimated CTOA is independent of machined notch tip radius of DENT specimen. The essential work of fracture and estimated CTOD depends on notch tip radius. Abstract: The Essential Work of Fracture (EWF) method is adopted to study the ductile tearing resistance of Dual-Phase steel (DP 780) sheet of 1 mm nominal thickness. All the three characterizing parameters, namely EWF, estimate of crack tip opening displacement (CTOD) for crack initiation and crack tip opening angle (CTOA), that can be determined by the EWF testing paradigm have been examined. It is concluded that, of these three parameters, the CTOA estimated by this easy and rapid procedure is the best choice both in terms of statistical robustness and for potential application in integrity assessment.
