- Abstract: Introduction: Obstructive sleep apnea syndrome is associated with the development of cardiovascular diseases caused by hypoxemia that occurs during sleep. The aim of this study was to classify phenotypes based on the polysomnographic findings and investigate the prevalence and risk factors for cardiovascular diseases according to the phenotypes. Methods: This study targeted adult patients who underwent polysomnography because of suspicion of sleep disordered breathing at a university hospital from November 2008 to February 2018. Analysis was conducted by classifying phenotypes into the apnea-predominant, the hypopnea-predominant, and the simple snoring group based on the results of polysomnography. We collected and analyzed polysomnographic data and clinical features such as medical history and comorbidities through reviewing electronic medical records. Results: A total of 860 adult patients underwent polysomnography were classified the phenotypes based on polysomnographic data, the apnea-predominant was 374 patients; the hypopnea-predominant was 301 patients; the simple snoring group was 181 patients. The hypopnea-predominant group showed a significantly higher incidence of hyperlipidemia (37.6%, P<0.001), heart failure (15.5%, P<0.001), and coronary artery diseases (20.9%, P=0.005) compared to the other groups.
