- Graphical abstract: Highlights: Effect of nutrients on nitrate removal by C. vulgaris was examined. The absence of NaCl and H3 BO3 in BBM solution did not affect the growth of alga. Decreasing the concentration of trace elements increased nitrate removal efficiency. The salinity (4.25 g/L) improved nitrate removal efficiency from water by microalga. Varying of the alga cultivation conditions increased nitrate removal efficiency. Abstract: In this study, Chlorella vulgaris, freshwater microalga, was used to investigate the effect of different parameters on nitrate removal efficiency from water. For this purpose, nitrate removal was studied as a function of different macro and micronutrients concentrations, nitrate concentration, inoculum sizes, initial pH of the medium, and different concentrations of sea salt and sodium chloride. Experiments were carried out for twelve days and sampling was done on 1, 4, 8 and 12 days. As compared to control group (70.48%, day 8), maximum nitrate removal (94.81%, day 8) was observed when trace elements concentration decreased to 25% of control group. Nitrate removal efficiency by microalga increased as nitrate concentration increased to 200% of control group. Among different (5, 10, 25, 50, 75 and 100%) inoculum sizes (v/v, alga stock/alga medium), lower alga concentration (5%) showed higher nitrate removal efficiency. Increasing the concentrations of both sea salt and sodium chloride from 4.25 to 34 g/L resulted in the decrease of nitrateGraphical abstract: Highlights: Effect of nutrients on nitrate removal by C. vulgaris was examined. Increasing the concentrations of both sea salt and sodium chloride from 4.25 to 34 g/L resulted in the decrease of nitrate removal efficiency during C. vulgaris cultivation. Results of this study revealed that nitrate removal from water by C. vulgaris is an efficient method and it can be improved by manipulating the cultivation conditions. … (more)
