- Graphical abstract: Highlights: Cellulose supported Pd nanoparticles were synthesized by a biogenic route. Pd nanoparticles incorporated polysulfone membranes were prepared and characterized. Membrane performance was studied using an aqueous solution of Crystal Violet. Effect of nanoparticles concentration on membrane performance was studied. The membrane showed 99% rejection of dye. Abstract: Pd nanoparticles were synthesized by a biogenic route using plant extract of resveratrol and PdCl2 . The nanoparticles were characterized by different techniques such as UV–vis, FTIR, Raman analysis, FESEM, HRTEM, XPS, etc. Further, we have carried out the work to develop a thin film nanocomposite membrane containing Pd nanoparticles to enhance the properties of the membrane in terms of flux, dye rejection, hydrophilicity, mechanical strength, antifouling and salt rejection. Pd nanoparticles were added in increasing concentrations (1%, 1.5%, 2%) into the membrane and characterized by FESEM, HRTEM, XPS, Contact Angle measurements, TGA, Tensile strength etc. The performances of the membranes were evaluated using crystal violet dye. Nanoparticles incorporated polysulfone membranes showed improvement in properties in terms of hydrophilicity, pure water flux, mechanical properties, rejection of dye and salt, antifouling activity etc. The membrane containing 2% Pd nanoparticles showed more hydrophilicity and dye rejection (99%) with breaking stress 7.85 mPa.
