- Abstract : The number of pets travelling under the Pet Travel Scheme has increased year on year since its inception, with the number almost doubling between 2015 and 2017. In addition to this, climate change and human movement is affecting parasite distributions worldwide. The UK is at high risk of many exotic parasites becoming endemic if they are allowed to enter and a consistent strategy is key in preventing this from happening. Pets receiving preventative treatments and tick checks post travel are an essential part of this strategy and post-travel clinics provide an opportunity for advice and treatments to be given and health checks to be carried out. There is also an opportunity for client bonding with the veterinary practice, as a comprehensive pet travel service is then given both before and after the journey has been completed. This article considers post-travel clinics and the requirements of the pet returning to the UK.
