- Abstract: An N-halamine precursor, 3- (2-aminoethyl)-5, 5-dimethylhydantoin (ADMH), was grafted onto the oxidized cellulose (OC) to obtain OCADMH. The OC was prepared by selective oxidation of microcrystalline cellulose (MCC). SEM, FTIR, Solid 13 C NMR and XRD analyses were used to characterize the target product. The chlorinated OCADMH was added into polyvinyl alcohol (PVA) solution to form uniform films by the solution casting method. And the PVA, PVA/OCADMH and PVA/OCADMH-Cl films were characterized by SEM, FTIR and XRD. The antibacterial activities of PVA/OCADMH-Cl films against S aureus and E coli O157:H7 were tested. The testing results showed that the chlorinated PVA/OCADMH films could inactivate all inoculated S aureus (ATCC 6538) and E coli O157: H7 (ATCC 43895) within 60 and 30 min of contact time, respectively. Highlights: An N-halamine precursor was synthesized and attached onto the oxidized cellulose (OC) to obtain OCADMH. The dispersion property of MCC was improved after the modification of with ADMH. The chlorinated OCADMH was added into polyvinyl alcohol (PVA) solution to form uniform films. The chlorinated PVA/OCADMH films could inactivate S aureus and E coli O157: H7 within 60 and 30 min, respectively.
