Abstract

Abstract : The electrochemical generation of hypervalent iodine reagents through the anodic oxidation of iodoarenes is discussed in the Review article by M. Elsherbini and T. Wirth onpage 13399 ff. The anodic oxidation of aryl iodides is successfully achieved under both galvanostatic and potentiostatic electrolysis conditions in either divided or undivided cells. Using electricity eliminates the necessity of terminal chemical oxidants, which minimize the waste and make the hypervalent iodine chemistry more sustainable. The electrochemically generated hypervalent iodine reagents are powerful in‐cell and ex‐cell mediators for several valuable chemical transformations including, fluorination and oxidative heterocyclizations.
