- Abstract: The preparation of acid modification of Bentonite clay photocatalyst was done by treated with series of acid concentrations (0.1M, 1M, 2M and 3M H2 SO4 ) under microwave irradiation. The prepared catalysts were characterized by Powder X-ray diffractometer (PXRD), Scanning electron microscopy (SEM), Brunner-Emmet-Teller (BET), Fourier transform infrared (FT-IR) and UV-Visible spectral analysis. The morphology of the catalysts which are significantly changes under microwave irradiation was characterized by SEM analysis. PXRD studies revealed that the catalysts have dioctahedral phase and the average crystallite size is found to be in the range of 11-18 nm. The optical properties of the photocatalysts were investigated by UV–Vis; demonstrate the energy band gap of the catalyst. Microwave irradiation derived 2M H2 SO4 catalysts exhibited excellent UV induced photocatalytic performance for the degradation of Congo Red (CR).
