Abstract

Highlights: Extremely preterm (EP) newborns are at increased risk for the "preterm behavioral phenotype." We examined the communication and socioemotional characteristics associated with late-bacteremia in 10-year-olds born EP. This prospective cohort study looked at definite late-bacteremia, suspected late-bacteremia, and no bacteremia. Definite late-bacteremia was associated with a small, non-statistically significant increased risk of autism. EP infants with suspected or definite late-bacteremia were at increased risk of social and communication impairments.
