- Highlights: In order to explore evolutionary characteristics of thermal radiant induced by hypervelocity impact on 2A12 aluminum target, and analyze main factors influencing the evolutionary characteristics, 2A12 aluminum projectiles were loaded by two-stage light gas gun to impact 2A12 aluminum plate at different incident angles (between incident trajectory and aluminum plate plane) and different impact velocities. Instantaneous optical pyrometer was employed to acquire voltage signals of flash, which can be used to calculate flash radiant intensity, flash radiant temperature, radiant source area and obtain evolutionary rules in the different impact conditions. Ultra-high speed camera was utilized to capture images of the vapor cloud, by which the area of vapor cloud was extracted and expanding rate of vapor cloud area was calculated. The results show that the range of flash radiant temperature is 4200K–7800 K when projectile is accelerated to 2∼3.2 km/s and incident angles of 30°, 45°, 60°and 90°, respectively. The radiant temperature will increase with increasing of impact velocities and decreasing of incident angles. when the incident angle decreases, the radiant source area increases, however, the evolution of the expanding rate for vapor cloud area is similar to flash radiant temperature, and the maximum expanding rate of vapor cloud area is 558 m 2 /s.
