- Graphical abstract: Highlights: The review addresses biochemical and molecular biological studies related to peritrophic matrix. Chitin forms between 3 and 13% of the PM in various species. Proteins are the main constituent of the PM. PM is derived from the midgut epithelium (Type I) or from the cardia (Type II) A hybrid mode for PM protein deposition occurs in lepidopterans.
