Graphical abstract: Highlights: TMSOTf and Hunig's base promote aldol reactions of esters and aromatic ketones with aldehydes. Excess base relative to TMSOTf favors the β-silyloxy carbonyl product. Excess TMSOTf relative to base favors the α, β-unsaturated carbonyl product.
