- Abstract: Commercial Pr-ZrSiO4 yellow pigment was milled into different particle sizes in order to investigate the influence of micronization on its properties. The research showed that micronization resulted in a significant color deterioration, accompanied by the pigment color changing from intense reddish-yellow to light yellow. Rietveld refinement analysis indicated that micronization caused intense crystallite size refinement and induced considerable microstrain in Pr-ZrSiO4 crystals. The reduction in particle size enhanced the light scattering and thus slightly diminished the color saturation of Pr-ZrSiO4 pigment. Micronization induced a significant decrease of Pr content in the surface layer of milled pigment particles due to the non-uniform distribution of Pr in unmilled pigment particles (i.e., enriched in the particles' surface layer). The milling-induced decrease of Pr content in the surface layer was the main reason for the color deterioration.
