- Abstract: High rate electric vehicle chargers (HREVCs) are becoming an important part of transportation infrastructure. This is due to their ability to enable journey distances which are longer than the range of the electric vehicle (EV). Often, HREVCs need a high power grid connection which can be very expensive, or impossible. HREVCs which are powered by co-located renewable energy are an effective way of reducing the necessary grid capacity for installation when used with an Off-vehicle energy store (OVES). The control strategy for charging this OVES from the grid is addressed in this paper by comparing static and dynamic charging powers. It was found that the dynamic charge pattern reduced both imports and exports to the HREVC over one year over the static grid charge case. Thereby showing that using the dynamic charge strategy enables HREVCs to be installed on a smaller grid connection and use less grid power.
