Abstract

Abstract : The cover feature picture shows a structural model of the molecular light switch melanopsin symbolically placed in a mouse brain. Light absorption of melanopsin activates signal transduction, controlling cellular functions. In their communication, S. Herlitze, K. Gerwert, et al. onpage 1766 in Issue 14, 2019 (DOI:10.1002/cbic.201900110 ) present an optogenetically attractive protein‐design strategy that integrates experimental and computational methods. The designed melanopsin variant promises a selective control of distinct G protein signaling pathways within optogenetic applications.
