- Abstract: A novel Zr-containing precursor was compounded by mixing asphalt, ZrCl4 and Zr(acac)4 . The pyrolysis mechanism was investigated by DSC-TGA, FTIR spectroscopy, XRD and SEM. The pyrolysis behavior, morphological evolution, microstructure and composition of the precursor were studied. The organic precursor transformed into m-ZrO2 at 600 °C, then pure t-ZrO2 at 1500 °C and complete ZrC phase after treatment at 1600 °C. Compare with harsh conditions (1000 °C, 100 MPa) of high pressure infiltration, we achieved the same inorganic transformation at mild conditions (500 °C, 4 MPa). The obtained ZrC-15 precursor had a high residual rate of 61.98 wt% after 1200 °C treatment and the ZrC content of composites was controllable to be used in different environments. C/C-ZrC composites with the density of 1.82 g cm −3 were fabricated successfully after 10 cycles using the synthesized precursor. The infiltration efficiency of precursor reached 0.123 g cm −3 per cycle, which was the highest level in reported studies.
