- Abstract: We combine experimental techniques and first-principles calculations to investigate the initial growth and intrinsic electronic properties of MoS2 on a graphite substrate. Our scanning tunneling microscopy (STM) and Raman studies reveal that monolayer triangular MoS2 flakes nucleate preferentially along the graphite steps. The uniform lattice orientation and detailed atomic arrangements of MoS2 and graphite are directly observed in high-magnification STM images. Moreover, a MoS2 /graphite heterostructure is simulated on the basis of experimental observations at the atomic level. The present results indicate that the selection of an appropriate substrate may enable us to tune the band gap of MoS2 while retaining its fundamental properties.
