- Abstract: The paper presents the effects of hybridization and silica nanoparticles on unhole and open hole compressive behaviours of woven Kevlar/glass fibre hybrid composite laminates. Residual compressive strength and stiffness were determined from an open hole compression (OHC) test conducted according to ASTM D6484-09, whereas the fractured surface behaviour was observed under scanning electron microscope (SEM). Silica nanoparticles were mixed into the epoxy resins using vacuum mechanical stirrer. Then, composite laminates were prepared using vacuum bagging method. Three different silica nanoparticles contents (5 wt%, 13 wt% and 25 wt%) were incorporated into the resin system with three different hybrid system (20:80, 50:50 and 80:20 of Kevlar fibres to glass fibres ratio). Results showed that the lowest compressive strength was observed in Kevlar fibre reinforced polymer. Therefore, hybridization of glass fibres with Kevlar fibres reduced the compressive strength of hybrid composites. However, the incorporation of silica nanoparticles into the epoxy resins improved the compressive properties of the hybrid composites. From the observation of the fractured surface, different fracture behaviours were observed in both Kevlar fibre and glass fibre composites. Fibre barrelling and crimping was observed in Kevlar fibres while glass fibres showed a fibre fracture with serrated and rough surfaces.
