- Abstract: Studies of late medieval pious endeavour tend to dwell on urban practice and, more particularly, on the investment and surveillance arranged within the parish – focusing on the role that close family and churchwardens played to protect intercessory arrangements. Such ventures, however, also had a civic dimension, examined here. In pre‐Reformation Bristol, the mayor and other municipal officers played an active role safeguarding devotional investment; in addition to investigating the oversight of pious practice in this town, the following also makes a start in considering how typical – or not – such effort was.
