Abstract

Graphical abstract: Three new Ln(III) coordination polymers (Ln = Sm(III), Pr(III) and Gd(III)) were synthesized with 2, 2- and 3, 3-dimethylglutarate ligands and characterized. Complexes1 –3 exhibit 2D layer networks and the 22- and 33glu ligands display unprecedented coordination modes. Abstract: In this work, three lanthanide complexes with 2, 2-dimethylglutarate (22glu) and 3, 3-dimethylglutarate (33glu), namely [Sm2 (µ3 -22glu)(µ4 -22glu)(µ3 -OH)2 (H2 O)]·H2 O (1 ), [Pr2 (µ3 -33glu)(µ3 -33glu)2 (H2 O)3 ]·3H2 O (2 ) and [Gd(µ4 -33glu)(µ4 -33glu)2 ]·2H2 O (3 ), were synthesized under hydro(solvo)thermal conditions and structurally characterized by powder and single crystal X-ray diffraction, IR spectroscopy and thermogravimetric measurements. Lanthanide ions bridged by 2, 2- or 3, 3-dimethylglutarate ligands in tridentate and tetradentate coordination modes form 2D layer structures for1 –3 . Structural analyses revealed that complexes1 and2 crystallize in the triclinic system, P 1 ¯ space group, while complex3 crystallizes in the monoclinic system, space group C2/c . The thermogravimetric analysis of1 –3 is discussed in detail. In addition, the phase purities of the bulk samples were identified by powder X-ray diffraction.
