Graphical abstract: Highlights: Three new pyrrole alkaloids (1 –3 ) were isolated from Lepidium meyenii . 1 –3 represent the first examples of pyrrole alkaloids found in Lepidium meyenii . 1 –3 were tested for their cytotoxicity. Abstract: Three new pyrrole alkaloids macapyrrolins A–C (1 –3 ) were isolated from the roots of Lepidium meyenii collected from Lijiang, Yunnan province in China. Their structures were elucidated by extensive NMR and MS spectroscopic analyses. Interestingly, macapyrrolins A–C represent the first examples of pyrrole alkaloids found in Lepidium meyenii with a benzyl substituent attached to the pyrrole nucleus. All the isolated macapyrrolins were evaluated for their cytotoxicity against five human cancer cell lines. However, no significant activities were detected at concentrations up to 40 μM.
