- Abstract : The effect of phospholipids, 1, 2-dipalmitoyl- sn -glycero-3-phosphocholine (DPPC) and phospholipase A2 (PLA2 ), in the presence of calcium ions on surface properties of silica particles was investigated by means of zeta potential, mean diameter and light transmittance. Silica particles were precoated with the monolayer or the bilayer of the phospholipid from the chloroform solution (silica/DPPC) or coated by DPPC adsorption (silica+DPPC) from the aqueous solution containing calcium ions. It was found that the presence of Ca 2+ ions improved remarkably neutral phospholipid (DPPC) adsorption on the silica surface. The obtained silica suspensions were found to be stable probably due to steric stabilization. The zeta potential of silica/DPPC suspension and the light transmittance through the suspension decrease after the PLA2 action in 1 mM calcium chloride solution were probably due to the hydrolysis products adsorption on the silica particles and formation of insoluble calcium palmitate molecules.
