Abstract

This study examines the concerns and attitudes of the residents in the Municipality of Lagadas, Greece, and in particular the gateway community of Mavrorachi Sanitary Landfill (MSL), and offers a general understanding of public perceptions regarding sanitary landfills and waste management issues from the residents' perspective. The results of the study indicate that there is low acceptance of the MSL. Not in my back yard (NIMBY) phenomena are also identified, while there is a positive view concerning financial issues and employment at the local level. The case study can be used as a valid tool in waste management facility planning, design and management, especially for sanitary landfills, in areas all around the world facing similar challenges such as lack of space and NIMBY phenomena.
