Abstract

Abstract: Based on the archaeological documentation from our recent excavations and the analysis of the archives and archaeological collections from HL Movius excavations, we describe the different characteristics of the successive occupations of Abri Pataud Level 2, attributed to the Final Gravettian (−22, 000 BP). The different subdivisions identified within this level are analysed both topographically and stratigraphically. Our observations confirm and clarify what had already been suggested as a result of the excavation of HL Movius: the Level 2 is a series of distinct human occupations. If the first occupations allow interpreting the shelter as a settlement place, however, the last occupation characterized by deposits of human remains associated with remarkable objects not under the sphere of day to day life seems to reflect some changes in the status of the site over time.
