Abstract

Abstract: The present study focused on detecting the presence of Clostridium difficile on veterinary hospital surfaces of large and small animal areas at the Universidad Complutense of Madrid. Isolated C. difficile strains were further characterized and investigated for antimicrobial susceptibility testing. Of n = 23 sampling area, 17% were positive for the presence of C. difficile . The isolates belonged to PCR ribotypes 078, 014, 039, and 154, of which RT 078 and 014 are also frequently found as human pathogens. Two isolates had high level resistance to metronidazole. These results suggest that the veterinary hospital environment constitutes a potential reservoir of zoonotical transferable C. difficile .
