Abstract

Highlights: Temporary migration regimes control the lives of migrants through emotions as well as formal legal mechanisms. Desire generates migration while allowing it to be channeled towards outcomes pursued by states, employers and others. For temporary migrants anxiety contributes to securing compliance by limiting perceived choices and certainty of plans. The connections between migration, desire and anxiety play a role in constituting ideal migrant subjects.
