- Abstract : Development of existing and new batteries is a research thrust to meet the challenge of the global increasing demand of storage energy at lower price. Al ion battery, similar to Li ion battery, but of lower manufacturing cost was investigated, modifying the Al foil with Ni coating, acting as anode and Graphite coated with Nano graphite powder, acting as cathode. The base electrolyte AlCl3 was modified by adding, the additives such as NaCl, InCl3 and HgCl2 . The electrochemical characterization of the electrodes was carried out by Cyclic Voltammetry(CV), Chronoamperometry (CA) and potentiodynamic(Pd), while the constituents and morphology of the electrodes surface were examined by XRD and Electron microscopy. It was found that the Nano graphite powder produced more current density and energy compared to solid graphite electrode. Al- Ni electrode acted as more efficient electrode compared to pure Al, giving much higher current during electro oxidation. The effect of electrolyte additives such as NaCl, InCl3, HgCl2 made the polarization resistance lower and current higher. An electrolyte composition of of 0.075M AlCl3 + 2M NaCl+ 4M InCl3 +5M HgCl2 produced thehighest current density and energy. The effect of electrode modification by Al-Ni electrode or nano graphite electrode as well as additives in the electrolyte system had steadily increased the cell current density from around 100 µA/cm 2 to over 300 mA/cm 2 .
