Abstract

Abstract: Few countries have made the developmental transition to developed country status in the post-World War II period. Although all of them have traversed the classical path of diversification away from agriculture into manufacturing, market economies among them that have managed the transition have done so on the basis of exports. This constrains the possibilities of transition in currently underdeveloped countries, as not all countries can be simultaneously successful as exporters. This has renewed interest in trajectories in which countries can prematurely diversify into high productivity services as a means to growth, with India often referred to as a country illustrating that alternative.
