- Graphical abstract: A series of new [NaMn II Mn III 3 ] clusters constructed using different potentially multidentate Schiff-base ligand and different auxiliary ligands have been synthesized and characterized. All of these clusters exhibit dominating antiferromagnetic exchange interaction. Abstract: A series of [Na2 Mn II 2 Mn III 6 ] clusters derived from trigonal bipyramidal [NaMn II Mn III 3 ] subunits bridged by mono-, di- and tri- fold azide groups Na[Na2 Mn II 2 Mn III 6 ( μ 3 -O)2 (HL 1 )6 ( μ 1, 3 -N3 )(HCOO)8 (H2 O)2 ](ClO4 )2 (1 ), [Na2 Mn II 2 Mn III 6 ( μ 3 -O)2 (L 2 )6 ( μ 1, 1 -N3 )4 ( μ 1, 3 -N3 )2 (N3 )2 (CH3 OH)2 ] (2 ) and [Na2 Mn II 2 Mn III 6 ( μ 3 -O)2 (L 3 )6 ( μ 1, 1 -N3 )7 (N3 )2 (H2 O)2 ] (3 ) have been obtained via the self-assembly of different potentially multidentate Schiff base ligands and auxiliary ligands (azide ions and formate ions) with divalent manganese salt in an air-exposed water-methanol solution. The structures of1, 2 and3 were characterized by elemental analysis, FT-IR spectroscopy and single-crystal X-ray diffraction analysis. Crystal structures reveal that all the three similar interesting decanuclear clusters [Na2 Mn II 2 Mn III 6 ] are derived from double trigonal bipyramid subunits bridged by mono-, di- and tri- fold azide groups, respectively. The magnetic susceptibility studies of1, 2 and3 in the temperature range 2–300 K shows that predominantly antiferromagnetic interactions between the manganese centers.
