Abstract

Abstract : An exact multiplicity result of positive solutions for the boundary value problemsu ′′ + λ a ( t ) f ( u ) = 0, t ∈ ( 0, 1 ), u ′ ( 0 ) = 0, u ( 1 ) = 0 is achieved, whereλ is a positive parameter. Here the functionf : [ 0, ∞ ) → [ 0, ∞ ) isC 2 and satisfiesf ( 0 ) = f ( s ) = 0, f ( u ) > 0 foru ∈ ( 0, s ) ∪ ( s, ∞ ) for somes ∈ ( 0, ∞ ) . Moreover, f is asymptotically linear andf ″ can change sign only once. The weight functiona : [ 0, 1 ] → ( 0, ∞ ) isC 2 and satisfiesa ′ ( t ) < 0, 3 ( a ′ ( t ) ) 2 < 2 a ( t ) a ′′ ( t ) fort ∈ [ 0, 1 ] . Using bifurcation techniques, we obtain the exact number of positive solutions of the problem under consideration forλ lying in various intervals inℝ . Moreover, we indicate how to extend the result to the general case.
