- Highlights: On average residents supported regulatory policies to reduce agriculture runoff. Political ideology affects policy support. News exposure and risk perception can mediate the effect of ideology. Proximity to Lake Erie does not directly affect policy support. We recommended greater and more penetrating communication about the risk associated with HABs within the Lake Erie Basin.
