Abstract : Two entrepreneurial U.S. companies have developed novel but very different consumer packaging applications for polylactic acid biopolymers. For one, the prospects may be sky high; for the other, they are literally repellent. PLA thermoplastic resins are polymers derived from renewable natural resources. The firms in question—Sana Packaging Inc. in Denver, Colo., and EarthKind LLC in Bismarck, N.D.—are each using bio‐filled PLA in their products.
