Abstract

Abstract: This report describes a new lighthouse at the Port of Valencia. It is the first lighthouse ever to be entirely built using fibre-reinforced polymers (FRPs), an innovative technology that is increasingly being used in civil-engineering applications due to the high strength, light weight and good resistance to corrosion of these materials. The various elements of the lighthouse were manufactured and assembled in Madrid, Spain and the structure was installed in just a few hours in the north extension of the Port of Valencia, Spain in February 2015. Due to the reduced impact on port operations during its installation and the anticipated low maintenance needs during its service life, this new lighthouse is a good example of innovation, creativity and sustainability in construction.
