Abstract

Abstract: The Port Authority of New York and New Jersey is replacing the functionally obsolete Goethals Bridge with a new cable-stayed bridge. The crossing is parallel to the existing bridge and features three eastbound and three westbound lanes plus a 3 m wide shared use path, with accommodations for future transit. The central feature of the 2, 205 m crossing is the cable stayed bridge with a steel superstructure and reinforced concrete towers of a "double V" configuration. Unique all-welded steel anchor boxes have been designed to efficiently secure the stay terminations in a manner not previously achieved. Development of the concept will be discussed in detail. Trial assembly of fabricated elements and erection techniques used for geometric controls and speed of erection will also be discussed. The steel superstructure, consisting of shop-welded edge girders and stay-pipe weldments, plus a unique redundancy truss integrally framed with the steel rails used for a maintenance traveler, added to overall efficiency in meeting strict project-specific design and performance criteria. Close to Newark Liberty International Airport, the tower height is limited to 83 m, resulting in shallow stay cable angle with associated structural performance implications.
