Abstract

Highlights: The postbuckling response of rings under external pressure is analyzed theoretically. The problem is studied by three strain-hardening ring models step by step. Each strain-hardening model is solved by different analytical methods. Analytical results correlate well with FEM results. Abstract: The large deflection postbuckling behavior of rings under external pressure was studied theoretically and numerically. Rigid linear strain-hardening property was adopted to approximate the plastic behavior of the rings. Analytical models based on different theories were derived to describe the large deflection properties of postbuckling behavior. The influence of material properties and geometric parameter on the postbuckling response was investigated based on the proposed analytical models. Besides, finite element analyses were carried out to verify the validity of the proposed analytical models and the numerical results showed good agreement with the theoretical ones.
