- Abstract: This study investigated the tribological properties of 5# engine oil, rapeseed oil, and fully-formulated 30# engine oil as base oils with MoS2 nanosheets applied as an additive. Friction tests were conducted using a reciprocating ball-on-plate tribometer for the magnesium alloy/steel contacts. The experimental results showed that MoS2 nanosheets are unsuitable for application as a friction modifier or as an anti-wear agent in fully-formulated 30# engine oil. In addition, the friction coefficient of rapeseed oil with MoS2 nanosheets added was reduced to 0.058 from 0.07 for pure rapeseed oil, and the wear volume was reduced to 1.77 mm 3 from 2.82 mm 3 . Further, the 5# engine oil with MoS2 nanosheets added provides the best lubricating property. The addition of 1.0 wt% MoS2 nanosheets to 5# engine oil resulted in a low friction coefficient of 0.055 and a wear volume of 1.28 mm 3 . The superior tribological behaviors of the MoS2 nanosheets in the 5# engine oil are attributed to the formation of an integrated and stable tribo-chemical film on the worn surface during the rubbing process.
