- Abstract : The cover picture shows a powder sample of the industrial pigment of Sicopal ® Orange K/L 2430 produced by BASF Colors & Effects ® along with the structural building blocks of its main constituent, the orange pigment 82. Sicopal ® Orange K/L 2430 is a chromium‐ and lead‐free inorganic pigment. It has a high chroma and hiding power as well as excellent fastness and resistance to weathering, represented by the rain drops. The crystal structure of the orange pigment was solved from combined X‐ray single crystal, X‐ray and neutron powder diffraction, 119 Sn Mössbauer spectroscopy, transmission electron microscopy, electron diffraction, and chemical analyses. The structure contains α‐Keggin type clusters {Zn M 12 O40 } (shown in green) which inspired us to name this compound Kegginite B . The kegging cluster four [ M 3 O13 ] trimers consisting each of three M O6 octahedra that share edges and one common oxygen atom connecting the trimers to the central ZnO4 tetrahedron. The octahedrally coordinated metal atom position M is mixed occupied by Ti 4+, Sn 4+ and Zn 2+ . Adjacent Keggin clusters share vertices and are further interconnected to blocks of four ZnO4 tetrahedra (blue). This framework of interconnected M O6 octahedra and ZnO4 tetrahedra contains channels in which additional Sn 2+ cations (orange), some of them disordered.
