- Abstract: This paper discusses the results of a study related to the elaboration of Al-Zr alloys, from the aluminothermic reduction of zirconium oxide. The addition of the ZrO2 was performed by two different techniques: 1) using the technique of submerged powders injection, and 2) powders addition with mechanical agitation. The results shows that is possible to reach Zr concentrations in the alloy in the order of 0.35 wt.%. Afterwards, a grain refining effect in solidified aluminum samples was in the order of 12 ASTM. From kinetic measurements was calculated fitting the results to the equations of the decreasing core nucleus model
