- Highlights: Plants evolved conserved and diversified genes for jasmonate biosynthesis and signaling. Jasmonate homeostasis and signaling play diverse roles in plant reproduction. Jasmonates promote rice spikelet development by activating E-class genes. Jasmonates control stamen development through multiple regulatory networks. Temporal and spatial biosynthesis and transport of jasmonates play pivotal roles in flower development. Abstract : Development of inflorescences and flowers in plants is controlled by the combined action of environmental and genetic signals. Investigations reveal that the phytohormone jasmonate (JA) plays a critical function in plant reproduction such as male fertility, sex determination and seed maturation. Here, we review recent progress on JA synthesis, signalling, the interplay between JAs and other hormones, and regulatory network of JA in controlling the development of inflorescence, flower and the male organ. The conserved and diversified roles of JAs in meristem transition and specification of flower organ identity and number, and multiple regulatory networks of JAs in stamen development are highlighted. Further, this review provides perspectives on future research endeavors to elucidate mechanisms underlying JAs homeostasis and transport during plant reproductive development.
