- Abstract: Brain function in the resting state can be decomposed into independent spontaneous subactivities representing brain intrinsic modes. A brain task-performing activity can also be decomposed into independent modes. Previous research has shown a high spatial correspondence between the resting-state and task-present modes, but how the brain task and resting states are related remains elusive. We propose to establish a framework spanned by universal intrinsic modes (generated from a resting data analysis) to represent a brain task state through task-specific modification on a subset of intrinsic modes. We demonstrate our model and method through experimental data analysis on one group of task fMRI data and another group of rest fMRI data (from 40 different subjects). Our fingertapping experiment results show that the primary motor task only modulates a few intrinsic modes in the functional framework. The brain functional framework (spanned by universal intrinsic modes) offers a unification representation of brain task and resting states for simplifying brain functional organization
